Problems with Insurance

Loss of Privacy

The New York Times, May 22, 1996, in a front page headline said it all: "Questions of Privacy Roil Arena of Psychotherapy." The time-honored ethic of confidentiality is out the window. Insurance company information is put on the Medical Information Bureau data banks that many outsiders have access to.

For example, people are turned down for future insurance just because they had been in previous therapy. And all this results from signing a release at the beginning of therapy, a release that gives away patient rights.
